Technology
Welcome to the Design & Technology Department
Design and Technology is an exciting subject where you will be challenged to think and to problem solve, to work alone and in groups. You will complete four projects each year and you will use a range of tools from those that are familiar and those that are new to you… and dangerous!
The department has two rooms, a general purpose workshop and a new electronics lab. We can work with metal, wood, plastics and electronics. We have some computer controlled machines including a laser cutter, as well as the more traditional pillar drills, lathes and routers. We have a small number of PC’s in the rooms and we use the school’s ICT rooms when we need to.
Workshops can be dangerous and you are expected to listen carefully to instructions - if you don’t you could hurt yourself or others! To help protect your clothing we have aprons for you to wear but you are advised to provide your own.
Each year group is split into three teaching groups for Design and Technology to ensure we have no more than 20 students in a group. Each group will have three 50 minute lessons a week, a double and a single.
Current year 7 projects are:
-
A key fob light. -
A Trebuchet, a medieval weapon of war! -
An electronic Steady Hand Game. -
A mechanical grabber project.
Students are expected and encouraged to take home projects as they complete them.
