Science

Staff:

Mrs L Johnson - Lead Teacher in Science

Mr N Goodman - Teacher of Science (Assistant Head Teacher)

Mr I Collier - Teacher of Science

Mr K Davidson - Laboratory Technician

Accommodation:

The school has two science laboratories located on the middle floor.

Teaching:

Pupils are taught in ability groups within their own year group.

Key Stage 3

Pupils follow the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 Programe of Study and sit their SATs examinations during May in year 9.

Biology, Physics and Chemistry units are taught in the sequence suggested by the QCA.

Key Stage 4

Pupils follow the AQA Core Science A Course in year 10 and the AQA Additional Science Course in year 11.

'Science A'

This is taught in six externally-examined modules during year 10. In addition there is a centre-assessed (CAU) which examines practical work and aspects of 'How Science Works'.

Examinations are taken in November, March and June and the CAU may be complted at any time during the year, with the marks to be made available to the exam board in May.

There are two modules each for Biology, Chemistry and Physics and examinations in these modules may be taken in any order.

The modules are:

  • Biology (BY1a) - Human biology, covering: co-ordination and control; healthy eating; drug abuse; and controlling diseases
  • Biology (BY1b) - evolution and the Enivornment, covering: adaptation for survival; variation; evolution; and how people affect the planet
  • Chemistry (CY1a) - Product from rocks, covering; rocks, and building; rocks and metals; and crude oil
  • Chemistry (CY1b) - Oils, Earth and the Atmosphere, covering: products from oil; plant oils; and the changing world
  • Physics (PY1a) - Energy and Energy Resources, covering: heat transfer; using energy; electrical energy; and generating electricityPhysics (PY1b) - radiation and the Universe, covering: electromagnetic waves; radioactivity; and the origins of the Universe.

'Additional Science'

This is taught in year 11. It is composed of three externally-examined modules and a centre-assessed unit (CAU).

Examinations may be taken in February and June (in any order or combination) and the CAU may be completed at any time during the year, with the marks to be made available to the exam board in May.

There is one module each for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The modules cover the following topics:

  • Biology - cells; how plants produce food; energy flows; enzymes; homeostasis; and inheritance
  • Chemistry - structures and bonding; structures and properties; equations and calculations; rates of reaction; energy and reactions; electrolysis; and acids, alkalis and salts
  • Physics - motion; speeding up and slowing down; work, energy and momentum; static electricity; mains electricity; and nuclear physics.
